SIEF2013 Excursions

With the Congress ending on the Wednesday evening many delegates will want to go on local excursions on Thursday 4th July. Listed below are some suggestions for tours with special prices for SIEF delegates. Please choose your preferred tour and make your reservation as soon as possible by contacting the tour organiser. Prices are per person.

DAY TRIPS BY BUS

1. Põlvamaa and Setomaa – nature and cultural heritage (~9hrs)

Get acquainted with the nature and heritage of the Põlva county and the culture of Seto people. During the tour we will visit the Põlva Peasant Museum, the historical post road Postitee as well as the Estonian Road Museum. The Road Museum is an interactive open-air museum with unexpected and innovative architectural solutions. From there, we will continue towards the Seto Peasant Museum in Värska. The Seto are one of the most original ethnic groups among the Balto-Finnic peoples that have succeeded in retaining their language, traditions and food. We will visit the museum, which is a copy of a traditional Setu farm, and eat Seto's traditional food.

Pick-up at 9am in front of Hotel Dorpat (Soola 6); back in Tartu at about 6pm.

2. Onion Road – Russian Old Believers’ villages at Lake Peipsi and the Alatskivi Manor (~8hrs)

We will drive through the villages of Russian Old Believers’ - Varnja, Kasepää, Kolkja - and make a stop at Lake Peipsi (Peipus), the biggest transboundary lake in Europe. In Kolkja, we will visit a farm, get acquainted with the old traditions of growing onions and get a taste of the traditional onion pie and tea. We will also visit the Kolkja Museum of Russian Old Believers. The next stop is Alatskivi Manor, one of the most luxurious Neo-Gothic castles in Estonia. We will take a tour of the castle and then drive on Mustvee, a town of different cultures on the shore of Lake Peipsi.

Pick-up at 9am in front of Hotel Dorpat (Soola 6); back in Tartu at about 5pm.

EXCURSIONS IN AND AROUND TARTU

1. Estonian Agricultural Museum (~3hrs)

Located in a former manor house in Ülenurme, three kilometres from Tartu, the Estonian Agricultural Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying and introducing the history of agriculture and rural life in Estonia. A guided tour of the museum will be followed by a hands-on workshop where you can learn and practice woodcarving (preparing a butter knife) or making a toy out of recycled textiles. The visit also includes a lunch of traditional Estonian food at the museum cafe. 

Pick-up at 10am from TBA; back in Tartu around 1pm.

2. Boat trip on Barge Jõmmu (2hrs)

A two-hour boat trip on board the reconstructed historic watercraft Barge Jõmmu, which was set afloat in 2006. This emotional journey includes a light breakfast and a morning coffee served with birdsong and beautiful views from the banks of River Emajõgi. The trip will start from the boat harbour in the city centre (next to the Atlantis restaurant) at 8am.

Pick-up at 8am at the boat harbour (by Atlantis restaurant); back by 10am.

3. Culinary sightseeing tour 'Tartu of the Locals' (3hrs)

A special culinary sightseeing tour focusing on modern and comfy cafes and restaurants cherished by the locals. During this gastronomic walking tour of the Tartu city centre and the Old Town, the guests will discover the most beautiful spots of this historically rich city and hear the guide’s stories about old and modern times. On the way, there will be great food & beer stops at the places locals love most, starting with a smooth starter at the cafe-restaurant Spargel in the Tartu Centre for Creative Industries. The next stop will be the A'Le Coq beer museum complete with beer tasting. Upon returning to the Old Town, a rich main course will be served in the legendary restaurant Volga. The tour will end with a sweet culinary treat at Café Werner that was founded in 1895 by Johann Werner and continues to be the most favoured place for cake and coffee.

Start at noon from TBA; end approx 3pm at Café Werner, city centre.
