Call for films - SIEF2025
The International Society for Ethnology and Folklore invites film submissions to be screened or presented during its 17th Congress, which will be held in Aberdeen, Scotland from the 3rd to the 6th of June 2025.
The theme of the congress is "Unwriting" a powerful tool with which to retract, or rewrite, some of what has been inscribed or recorded, allowing us to reshape that which power has imposed and presenting an opportunity for those who have often only been written about.
For the film programme, we encourage submissions that engage with the process of unwriting, challenge hegemonic frameworks which limit us to predetermined paths and casually accepted paradigms. Ethnologists, folklorists, cultural and social anthropologists, and representatives of related disciplines (e.g. urban planning, architecture, design) and institutions (museums, archives, etc.), as well as filmmakers and other artists (e.g., photographers, sound designers) are encouraged to submit film proposals for screening and discussion during the conference.

04 November 2024 (Monday) to 3 February 2025 (Monday): period for submission of abstract and links to material

7 March 2025 (Friday): announcement of selection committee’s decision

10 March 2025 (Monday) to 16 May 2025 (Friday): period for final screening links to be submitted
Criteria for submission

Work must have been completed after 1 January 2021

Work that is not originally in English must be subtitled in English

All lengths are accepted
How to submit proposals
First phase - Selection process (submission until 03 February 2025):
Please ensure you provide an adequate synopsis in English (approx. 300 words) and a link to a shareable online preview version (on Vimeo or YouTube). The link may be unlisted, or password protected (if the latter, please provide password in the form!). Please make sure the link remains valid at least until 15/04/2024. Please make sure the video in the link includes director(s)’ short bio (no more than 150 words) and all credits and technical data (production year, country of origin, country of filming, language(s), previous screenings, awards).

Second phase – only for selected films (10 March - 16 May 2025):
Provide a screening copy link of the version in digital format suitable for public screening in high resolution.
Along with the screening copy file, the authors and/or producers of the selected films should also send:
Definitive Film Synopsis (no more than 300 words) with 2 still film frames (thumbnails for conference materials)
Definitive Director(s)’ short bio (no more than 150 words)
Trailer of the film for the conference website
Authorisation for the screening of the film at the 17th Congress of SIEF, within the SIEF2025 Film Programme (a template will be provided)
Authorisation for the use of promotional images by SIEF in posters, on the congress website or in any other dissemination materials
We firmly encourage the presence of the creators/directors/producers in the screening sessions during the conference itself, as the purpose of these sessions is to provide a space for critical thinking and debate on audio/visual work.
