Terra Incognita
[Film] Across Europe, refugees are placed in abandoned villages to combat rural depopulation. But how do refugees make a home in a place others choose to leave? Terra Incognita is part of an artistic research project in Valle di Comino – a valley hidden between Rome and Napels. It consists of a visual essay and a documentary film that together create Terra Incognita – land unknown. The film shows a world of confusion, where few things make sense, and one can only expect the unexpected – an impossible task. The essay, in the form of a ‘travel guide’, was collaboratively created with Italian and refugee residents. It shows the many ways in which the refugees navigate daily life. The works can be viewed separately, but viewed together they show how it is neither possible nor impossible to make a home, while raising questions around ways of making and representing knowledge.what it means to make a home in a place others choose to leave.
