Maasai Speak Back
When poverty stricken Maasai women receive wealthy cultural tourists in their mud huts on the Tanzanian savannah, a myriad of doubts, misunderstandings and suspicions arise. From their cozy couches, the well-meaning Dutch families nevertheless look back on their exotic Maasai adventure with pride and excitement. Until they hear what the people they met actually have to say. Not only the widespread Maasai stereotype, but also the imagery Maasai have of ‘whites’ is revealed and destroyed, culminating in surprising, regretful and sincere dialogues between both. Although huge international inequality and local cultural constellations often make it hard for Maasai women to be heard, as they speak their mind, their strength, empathy, wisdom and authority draws one into a worldview that questions and provides alternatives for expanding capitalist and individualist rationales. The storyline and cinematography playfully address the entanglements of contrast and continuities between the two worlds, or is it only one?
