SESSION: Body and Senses as Subject/Resistance
Monday 21 June
Roundtable discussion on this topic: 16:15-18:00
Bearing
How do we capture and understand the ephemeral, transformational and often painful experience of becoming a mother for the first time? Bearing, is a visual autoethnography of motherhood, it explores the ‘emotional’ in both ethnographic film practice and maternal experience, empowering me to resist hegemonic maternal narratives. Documenting the banal and repetitious nature of everyday life with a small child, the film is a portrait of the liminal identity of motherhood in middle class western culture. Through sensory storytelling the work speaks to feminist concepts of becoming (Braidotti, 2002), performativity (Butler, 1990) and public comfort (Ahmed, 2004; 2017). Exploring themes of identity, body and place, we see my daughter and I grow into our relationship of mother/daughter through the passage of time. The film questions the way women have to mother in our modern world where isolation is more common and women struggle ever more to balance career, home life, their own sense of self and mental wellbeing.
